Here Are Some Storylines We May Expect To See In Amazon's ‘The Rings Of Power’ Series
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series is set to be one of the most highly anticipated, expensive, and largest episodic production of 2022. However, there is not much information on it as of yet. With the premiere date still several months away, we are sure to get some more details before then. The filming for season one has completed, and the series is in the post-production phase. The cast has been mostly announced with Morfydd Clark playing the younger Galadriel and Robert Aramayo as the younger Elrond. While the series follows the storylines of elves, men, dwarves, and the original jobbits, the Harfoots, these two characters are reportedly the main focus of much of season one.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series will be taking place during the Second Age of Middle Earth. The events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place in the Third Age. Many fans initially thought that The Rings of Power would focus on events in The Silmarillion, which takes place primarily during the First Age and the fight with Morgoth the first Dark Lord. On the contrary, showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay have told fans that they do not actually have the rights to anything in The Silmarillion. The story of The Rings of Power will follow The Appendices at the end of The Return of the King.

J. A. Bayona directs the pilot episode, which is actually a two-part pilot. He is most known for Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, The Impossible, and The Orphanage. The first season will also have two other directors: Wayne Che Yip and Charlotte Brändström. There will be eight episodes in the first season followed by four more seasons (seasons 2 and 3 have already been greenlit). There is also a rumored spin-off show in the talks, although what that could be about is yet to be seen. McKay and Payne have said that they are condensing a few hundred years into a period of eight to ten years for the purpose of the show, but it is unclear what that might include and/or leave out. According to an interactive map on Amazon Prime and character leaks, it looks like the first season is incorporating characters from the mid-late Second Age.
What does that mean exactly? There are two main storylines that take place in the lore of the Second Age. The first of which is mainly in the mid-portion of the timeline and focuses on Sauron, Morgoth’s apprentice, and his slow rise to power through craftiness, cunning, and deceit of the elves. In the region of Eregion in Middle Earth, Sauron disguises himself as an elf named Annatar and convinces Celebrimbor, a metal and gem smith to forge the Rings of Power. Celebrimbor does, nine for the men, seven for the dwarf lords, and three for the elves. Galadriel tries to convince Celebrimbor not to do it as she does not trust Annatar. Gil-galad, a powerful elf lord who is confirmed to be a part of the cast tries to dissuade him as well. Some versions of Tolkien’s drafts have Annatar convincing Celebrimbor to not listen to them and lead a coup that ousts Galadriel.
According to leaked reports, this storyline could definitely be a part of the first few. From released images and the trailer, it looks like Galadriel is on the run from something. Of course with the title being The Rings of Power, the series’ focus would be on the forging of the rings, so it would make sense that this would be a major part of the story. Now, which version or extra spin the creators will go with remains to be seen.
Eregion was not the only Middle Earth region of import during this time. Creators have hinted of several other locations like Númenor, Moria, and Lindon. Númenor is the realm of men that sank into the sea due to Sauron’s (as Annatar) betrayal and its leader’s hubris. We may see depiction of several events in Númenor included ones headed by Queen Tar-Telperiën (who was queen during the forging of the rings) and her nephew Minastir. We could also see events in Moria during this time headed by Durin III and in Lindon (an Elf city) with Gil-galad. Both places would be trying to maintain their relationship with Eregion as it falls under Annatar’s influence, and the unease between the dwarves and the elves grows in earnest. All of the plot lines would converge into one big battle during the War of the Last Alliance before the Black Gate of Mordor when Isildur cuts the One Ring off of Sauron’s hand.
A character named Pharazon takes control of Númenor in a coup. In his pride, he accepts a challenge from Sauron. Sauron is captured, but this is exactly all according to his plan to make Númenor fall. Valinor (where the elves are from) is then shut off from the rest of Middle Earth.
The forging of the Rings of Power, the fall of Númenor, Sauron’s rise to power, and the subsequent War of the Last Alliance will be featured prominently in the series. Executive Jennifer Salke has indicated that it is “one big series” and season one will be the one to build “the infrastructure of what will sustain the whole series.”
The pilot episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will air on September 2, 2022 on Amazon Prime. The title of the first episode has yet to be released. There is not much news either since the trailer drop. Hopefully, in the coming months, we will get some more information as to what to expect from this highly anticipated series.
