The realm of video games continues to expand within the galaxy far, far away, and it seems like old friends are returning. The Hollywood Reporter and Star Wars.com have confirmed that Amy Hennig has directly made a deal with Lucasfilm to develop a new Star Wars game. It is a return of someone we thought would never ever have a chance to make a Star Wars game, but now the return has come.

Skydance New Media and Lucasfilm Games are collaborating to develop a narrative-driven cinematic action-oriented game with this new up-and-coming studio. The remnants of Visceral Studio are back, with award-winning writer/director Amy Hennig leading the charge once again. This is a memorable day to see someone who many thought would never get their chance to return to the galaxy far, far away now have a second shot at it. It is quite the creative flex.

RELATED:

Amy Hennig, whose credits include Legacy of Kain, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted, was set to make a video game with Visceral studios long ago called Project Ragtag. Unfortunately, its development was seen to be a turbulent one. Her Visceral studio was very much pulled around by EA and its gaming politics’ various ins and outs. There was even some released footage and several assets of the game. As a result, Amy may likely be making a brand new game from scratch.

Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, had this to say,

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working again with Amy. She and the Skydance New Media team have the talent and ambition to create a unique Star Wars adventure.”

What Amy Hennig brings to the Star Wars table will be hard to say. One would perhaps predict that this is a resurrection of Project Ragtag. This would be ironic but very welcome, given that was her original story when still working for EA. But, of course, that was four years ago, so maybe she has changed her mind and decided to do something else - tell a new story within a new era. Anything is possible, that is for sure; we don’t even have a release date for when this game will even be released. However, if it gets released, it will surely be quite something special, one would expect.

Lucasfilm gaming has been slow going for a while now, but things seem to be accelerating in the realm of video games.

Star Wars and gaming have gone hand in hand for a few decades, from classics for the Atari, Nintendo, SEGA, XBOX, and Playstation. Including great games like Super Star Wars, Battlefront, KOTOR, Rebel Commando, The Force Unleashed, Jedi: Fallen Order, Rogue Squadron, and Empire at War, each with unique game styles and stories. After all the stories being told within the games, it is super fascinating to watch and play. They are also great ways to expand the universe of Star Wars in a way that can be interactive with fans and let them really live within the majestic world of Star Wars. So an interactive story-driven game would be just something that the galaxy far, far away world could need.

Amy Hennig returning to Star Wars is quite the comeback story. After her Project Ragtag story got caught in the slog of gaming development, it’s good to see that she will have a different chance to come back and develop something. With such talent and creativity, the contributions would be immense. Who knows where this story could go with such creative talent behind it.

Hopefully, gaming will continue to expand into other areas, allowing other creative voices to come on and give their own unique takes. This will let Star Wars explore areas never explored before and ideas it never thought of fleshing out. Hence, expanding the universe and the story of Star Wars.
