After nearly 40 years, Mon Mothma finally gets her spotlight onscreen. The third named female character with spoken lines in the entire Star Wars original trilogy will be featured when Andor premieres on September 21 on Disney+.

The leader of the Alliance to Restore the Republic will be played once again by Genevieve O’Reilly, who began the role in Revenge of the Sith in 2005. However, her scenes were largely deleted from the final film. She was chosen for her resemblance to the character’s original actress, Caroline Blakiston. O’Reilly returned to the role for not only Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but episodes of Star Wars Rebels. Her involvement in Rogue One of course parlays into the preceding events that Andor will chronicle. O’Reilly is very excited about the character’s development after such limited and minor screen time prior, and the show itself being a sociopolitical drama in the spy genre for the Star Wars franchise.

Series creator and Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy touts that this is just as much Mon Mothma’s story as Cassian Andor’s. After all, Andor will have to make an impression on the leader as trust and rapport between the two characters are necessary to get everything in motion.

Mothma’s work starts while she is still serving in the Galactic Senate. She has yet to become stoic and hardened by the years of fighting. She is still hopeful that the little things she does will make a difference. She is not quite broken yet after speaking out for peace between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and against Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s increasing power.

We will also see her home life and how everything affects her there. Maybe we’ll get to see her play some of that smashball she loves so much. Certainly not a lot of sports are on display in live-action Star Wars productions, at least outside of podracing, and no, the gladiatorial stuff from Attack of the Clones isn’t quite the same. Something about the loss of hobbies and fun under fascism, and the degradation of society are sure to appear in some capacity

There is heavy overlap between Andor and Rebels with both series starting out at roughly the same point in the 5 BBY-4 BBY timeframe. It appears Andor’s second season will cover about the same time period as the later season of Rebels, at least before the latter’s time jump to after the Battle of Endor at the series finale. Maybe we will get to see Mon Mothma flee Coruscant after the speech condemning the Ghorman Massacre that got her branded as a traitor. We could even see her leave on the Chandrila Mistress, the freighter she abandons once it is struck by Imperial forces.

The two leads Mon Mothma and Cassian Andor start on separate worlds, a great distance apart until they converge presumably by the end of the year over which the first season takes place. Situations will grow increasingly dire into the second season until the fateful mission we saw in Rogue One. Instead of seeing Mothma dip into certain scenes in Rebels before dipping back out, she will take center stage, dealing with all the new nooks and crannies contributing to the buildup of events. It all begins in less than two weeks.
