Benedict Cumberbatch Answers Question On A Third 'Doctor Strange'

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange

The recent Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness movie furthered the Marvel character’s story alongside the intricacies of the Multiverse itself. Forced to travel through multiverses and search for allies to help him defeat Scarlet Witch, the film ended with the door open for future projects, as Doctor Strange is approached in a mid-credits scene by a sorceress named Clea (played by Charlize Theron) to ask Strange’s help.

While the ending of the film leaves Strange’s story open-ended, actor Benedict Cumberbatch is also eager to return to the role. When asked by the New Indian Express if there is a Doctor Strange 3 in the works, he replied: “I hope so. I would love to do another one. Doctor Strange is such a complex character and it feels like there is so much more to explore with him. He is such a brilliant character and I’m still having a wild time playing him.”

Audiences seem to agree with Cumberbatch as well. Doctor Strange and Multiverse of Madness was the second highest-grossing film of 2022 so far and he has quickly become one of the most popular characters in the MCU. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also stated that Cumberbatch is the franchise’s “anchor” which points to the high probability of the character returning soon.

Cumberbatch is clearly fond of his role, despite not having had a background in comics before. He told the New Indian Express that although he enjoyed the Christopher Reeve Superman films, he knew nothing about Doctor Strange having, “to ask some people about who he was when the character was first pitched to me. The more I have discovered about him, the more I have loved him as a character. He’s a wonderful character to play.”

Doctor Strange running

With the combination of audience reaction, Marvel Studios support, and the actor himself eager about the role and the future, it’s only a matter of time before the next official Doctor Strange project is announced. While audiences wait for confirmation, there is quite a bit on the horizon for Marvel this year. Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in theaters on July 8 with She-Hulk premiering on Disney+ on August 17. Later this year, audiences will have Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on November 11 with the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy 3 opening in theaters in May 2023.

While a heavy schedule may mean that it may be some time before we see Stephen Strange again, it is thrilling to know the support and love for the character is there. Even if it surprises Cumberbatch. When asked if he anticipated the popularity of Doctor Strange by the New Indian Express, he said: “Not really. I’m still surprised at how prominent he has become. I always knew there was amazing potential there because of all the aspects to the character, but I definitely had no idea that we would get to be at this point with the multiverse aspect when we started out.”
