Carl Weathers Reveals He Is Directing An Episode For Season 3 Of 'The Mandalorian'

Now that The Book of Boba Fett is over, fans have been trying to get their fix for anything and everything Star Wars and our favorite Mandalorian, Din Djarin. As you know we ended the The Book of Boba Fett with Mando and his foundling Grogu heading off on an adventure.

With nothing coming out of Disney or Lucasfilm on the status of the series, plus everyone being more focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi coming May 25th, we seem to be getting our news wherever we can, including a confirmed director of at least one chapter in Mandalorian Season 3, Greef Karga actor, Carl Weathers.

In a previous post, Carl Weathers confirmed that he was "in the thick" of filming Season 3, which we hope would give us a late 2022 debut for the season. But this was really just to confirm that his character would be making an appearance in the new season. Weathers, who has always been a fan favorite thanks to his openness and accessibility to fans, confirmed February 15 via a Twitter fan question that he will indeed be directing an episode as well. When asked if he will be directing an episode, Weathers responded, “Affirmative as DIRECTOR!”

Now that we know Weathers is directing an episode, what does it mean for the storyline of Season 3 of The Mandalorian? The character of Greef holds a significant place within the lore of The Mandalorian because in Season 1, as the the head of the bounty hunter’s guild, he is the one who gave Din Djarin the bounty which led to him finding his partner, Grogu, and forge a new classic Star Wars coupling like R2 and C-3PO or Han and Chewbacca.

In Season 2, Greef again led Mando and the team into another inciting action when they raided what was supposed to be an abandoned Imperial facility on his planet of Nevarro, but the base turned out to be a mysterious cloning and research facility. Carl Weathers also directed this episode, which was a great blend of story-driven narrative and action. Weathers as director means that we will most likely see the steady stable which has been built around The Mandalorian. In addition to Weathers, expect Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, and Bryce Dallas Howard to all have directorial credits.

Based on scenes in The Book of Boba Fett, we know that Season 3 of The Mandalorian will most likely center on Din trying to regain his faith and acceptance to “The Way” by taking a trip to Mandalore. Perhaps Greef will be assisting Din and Grogu in their quest by either giving assistance to the pair through information, technical support, or physical assistance. An interesting reveal when looking at Carl Weathers IMDB page, shows that Weathers is listed as appearing in all the episodes of the upcoming season, but whether that is a technicality or if he actually is going to be in the series for all episodes remains to be seen.

The unique part of The Mandalorian is the timeline setting within the Star Wars universe. It is set far enough back in the timeline to slowly build towards the sequel movies, so maybe we get a tie-in episode that connects to the sequel trilogy or other current Disney+ projects, such as Ahsoka. There is currently no precedent that connects Greef to Ahsoka, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen, as Greef being a former Guild leader and Magistrate could help Ahsoka in her hunt for Thrawn. But should Book of Boba Fett get a second season, then maybe Greef needs to pay his respects to the new keeper of Mos Espa.
