Disney Announces Premiere Date For The First Of Its Three Final Special Episodes Of 'The Owl House'
Disney has officially announced the season three premiere date for its highly acclaimed animated series The Owl House. It’s certainly something to give a hoot about. And Luz has her beta beanie back!
The third and final season will premiere on Disney Channel on October 15 at 9 PM with the first of three specials and will be simulcast on Disney XD. That first special is called “Thanks to Them”, and will have Luz Noceda and her friends figuring out a way to get back to the Boiling Isles to rescue King and face off against the Collector and, apparently, Emperor Belos, who despite having his body obliterated, a piece of him landed on Hunter as he was transported to the human world. The episode’s airing situation brings the show back to primetime, just as it began in January 2020. Lately, the second season finale of Amphibia and its final two episodes were also given primetime slots, while otherwise, both series had settled into Saturday mornings. Disney XD simulcasts have been about as common, with the Phineas and Ferb finale, Descendants 2, and last month’s premieres of Zombies 3 and Hamster and Gretel getting such treatment.
Of course, the three specials, unfortunately, comprise the entire third and final season. The third season was announced shortly before the second season premiere in May 2021, and its format was immediately picked up by the fandom as a bad sign. Creator Dana Terrace would later confirm this. In October, she revealed that the truncation was because certain executives thought it did not “fit into the Disney brand” and while much of the fandom believed it was queerphobia regarding Luz and Amity’s relationship, it was the heavier serialization that the channel was moving away from. The season length itself was kneecapped by pandemic-related budget cuts resulting in episode losses of about 70% (6 half hours vs 20). The Peabody Award-winning series’s remaining two specials will premiere sometime in 2023.
