The DC franchise is no stranger to pushing the envelope and no one pushes it with more swagger than The Batman and of course his unique band of villains. To tell a gritty story well, especially a character spotlight on a wrongdoer as disdainful as The Penguin and to tell it in an authentic way one needs a team with the creativity, comic experience, and willingness to take risks. Enter Craig Zobel.

Zobel is in talks with HBO Max to be an executive producer and possibly to direct some episodes for the spin-off series, The Penguin. Zobel brings experience to the table along with an already established relationship with HBO as he has had success in directing Mare of Eastown, which has earned him two Emmys. Additionally, he has earned a PGA award and a DGA nomination for his work on the show.

It remains to be seen what his level of involvement will be with the show as he has other commitments that may present a conflict, time will tell how many episodes he may direct. However, the show is already set for success as Lauren LeFranc is the current showrunner for the program and brings her own skillset and experience to the table as well. Her television credits include Agents of Shield and Chuck. Additionally, Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark are producers for The Penguin as well as Colin Farrell dually reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot as well as being an executive producer for the series. The spinoff series will explore The Penguin’s rise to power in the criminal underworld of Gotham City.

Filming is expected to begin in January with a goal of completing by the end of summer 2023. A specific release date has not been set.
