Kenan Thompson Will Host The 2022 Emmy Awards

Kenan Thompon

NBC has found a host for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, and not only is he reliable and experienced, but he is also perfect. Their choice? Saturday Night Live and comedy legend Kenan Thompson. It is the sixth straight NBC telecast to be hosted by an SNL alum, most recently in 2018 by Colin Jost and Michael Che, who were and still are on the show. Thompson began his career in sketch comedy as an original cast member on All That in 1994, staying on for the first five seasons before finishing up his four-season sitcom Kenan & Kel.

His second sitcom, Kenan, earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy in its first season a year ago, however, its second season aired entirely this past January and was canceled in May. He has five Emmy nominations stemming from his SNL work, three Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy and two including a win for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for “Come Back Barack”.

As far as hosting, his credentials go well beyond the numerous host characters he’s played in sketches. He’s been picking up quite a bit in the last few years. It starts with 2019’s NHL Awards and was announced to host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner… in February 2020, before the world shut down. But that’s fine because, in 2021, he hosted Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards, a brilliant and surprising pick by the network, the People’s Choice Awards which aired on NBC and E!, and even The Jonas Brothers Family Roast on Netflix. And then he hosted the NHL Awards again this year!

He’s always been funny since the days of Superdude and Pierre Escargot, even if his most persistent and longest lasting impression has been sullied. He’s even getting his well-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on August 11. Kenan Thompson is getting the recognition he deserves and it is gratifying to see. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards air on September 12.
