KOTOR Remake Reportedly Will Remove Major Elements From The Game
KOTOR fans got some incredible news last week when it was all but confirmed that a remake of Knights of the Old Republic is in the works with Aspyr Media, who were responsible for several ports of the game. While there has been no official confirmation from Aspyr or any other major party involved, the confirmation comes from a couple of reputable sources who both confirmed that they knew that the remake was in development. Also, because of the rather loose confirmation, there are few concrete details surrounding the remake. However, a new rumor was recently revealed regarding the gameplay.
YouTuber MrMattyPlays stated in a video earlier this week that the Knights of the Old Republic remake would be abandoning the turn-based RPG combat for a more action-oriented style of combat. He stated,
“This is going to be an action RPG of sorts. They are walking away from that real-time, turn-based combat and doing something more along the lines of action combat.”
However, no detail was given on what style of action combat the remake would take. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the RPG elements will be completely removed. Several people have pointed out that other Bioware franchises such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age started out with classic turn-based style combat, but they slowly evolved to feature more action during combat and softened the turn-based system. Final Fantasy is another series that we have seen evolve to feature more of a focus on action during the combat in its more recent entries. In the video, Matty even states that it could be similar to the way Final Fantasy VII: Remake did their combat, but this is by no means confirmation combat will be that way in the remake. For all we know, the remake could take on more of a Dark Souls style combat that we saw in Jedi: Fallen Order.
This is, of course, all speculation. Even the announcement of the game’s existence is shrouded in an air of uncertainty. There are enough sources backing the rumors to make the game seem like a certainty, but that also makes it much more difficult to get more details about the game. If the rumors are true, then this is bound to upset some die-hard fans of the franchise and Bioware’s original work. On the other hand, several games have greatly benefited from a “from-the-ground-up,” remake like Resident Evil 2 and Crash Bandicoot. Likewise, another rumor has stated that EA and Bioware will have no involvement with the KOTOR remake. Most fans will probably rejoice with this news since both EA and Bioware have lost a lot of faith with fans over the past few years, but there are bound to be some purists who would at least like to hear Bioware is involved in some way. A lot of people have also stated that they would rather get a Knights of the Old Republic III rather than a remake of a game there have already been several ports of.
Unfortunately, the answers to all these questions, comments, and concerns are still very much up in the air. Until someone from Lucasfilm, Lucasfilm Games, EA, Bioware, or Aspyr makes a statement, no one is able to confirm anything to do with the game. One thing is perfectly clear, however: the love for the Knights of the Old Republic games is still incredibly strong and passionate in the hearts of fans. There is obviously still a huge demand for KOTOR content, so hopefully we will get some sort of information about the game in the coming weeks. Hopefully, fans won’t have to simply speculate and dream much longer, because we would all rather be back in the Star Wars world swinging a lightsaber.
