Ncuti Gatwa Will Begin Filming 'Doctor Who' Series 14 This November
The future of Doctor Who is becoming ever so slightly clear. Incoming Fourteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa is set to begin filming his first series of the BBC sci-fi adventure in November. His casting was first announced in May. However, since the show’s 2005 revival, the fourteenth series is not expected to air until 2024.
While this means that 2023 is another gap year without a full new series, it’s sounding more and more like it will be another year of specials. Like with 2022, which has “Eve of the Daleks” for New Year’s Day, “Legend of the Sea Devils” for Easter, and the still publicly unnamed special celebrating the BBC’s Centenary in October, our source claims that there will be as many as another three specials in 2023.

It would be nonsensical to hold Gatwa’s first adventure for over a year after his presumed first scene once Thirteen regenerates. Maybe another short series would be preferred, but it’s good to know that it’s probably not just going to be one anniversary special, but multiple across the year to make a stronger year-long celebration. It seemed like Flux has set the threshold that if there were anywhere near six specials just means it could reasonably be considered a season. It would be great to see season lengths cross the ten threshold again, closer to the twelves and thirteens of the four Doctors preceding Whittaker’s Thirteenth.
Elsewhere, David Tennant was at Fan Expo Boston over the weekend and reportedly stated that the set photos that included Catherine Tate and the late Bernie Cribbins tell just a tiny fraction of the story and character interactions of the 60th anniversary, and while, of course, no disclosures were made, Ncuti as Fourteen should be a sure thing, and maybe a little Neil Patrick Harris too.
