The Trailer For 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' was Released During The Comic-Con Panel For The Movie
Dungeons & Dragons has seen a large uptick in popularity over the last few months with Stranger Things, and now we can add fuel to the fire with the release of the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer having just dropped at San Diego Comic-Con! The movie follows a star-studded band of thieves looking to right some wrongs in a movie with plenty of action, fantasy, comedy and pieces of D&D lore that I am sure players will notice right off the bat. It’s set to release in March of 2023, so for now, we are going to walk through some of the coolest things of note from a D&D nerd.
First, a quick introduction of the cast and their classes. Chris Pine plays a bard whose instrument of choice is a lute, Michelle Rodriguez plays an axe-wielding barbarian, Regé-Jean Page of Bridgerton fame plays a shiny and pristine paladin, Sophia Lillis plays a druid with a set of horns, and Justice Smith has a staff and no armor which, to me, reads as a sorcerer. The movie also stars Hugh Grant and some fantastic-looking special effects. The film was delayed multiple times but it seems we’re finally getting what we all deserve! You can take a look at the trailer below:

Now, to begin the easter egg hunt! Some of the first things off the bat that are in the trailer are, of course, magic and dragons. But the more in-depth piece we will be looking at is the use of a subclass called Wild Shape. This subclass is specific to druids and clearly, Sophia Lillis’ character falls in that subclass. There is a scene in the trailer around the 01:10 mark where we see a horse transform into a creature called an OwlBear. The clip before heavily implies that Sophia’s druid might be such a creature and it is then confirmed a few moments later after watching the OwlBear destroy a group of bad guys before transforming back into the redhead. Another neat spell we see Sophia’s character use is Dimension Door which allows a user to teleport to any location within range and land in the exact spot of their choosing.
During one of the arena clips of the trailer, we see the group jump into something called a gelatinous cube while avoiding a displacer beast. These cubes are monsters that break down and absorb organic material while taking up quite a bit of space. I’d say the team of thieves was taking quite a risk if that’s the case as I have yet to come across one of these cubes in my own campaign. The displacer beast that is seen lunging at the party as they use the cube to dodge it is almost like a panther. They have 6 legs and a pair of 5ft long tentacles that they use for attacks along with, of course, their claws and teeth. We also get a glimpse at a type of Dragonborn damage called Breath Weapon, which allows users to exhale destructive energy for their action. A character's Draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation.
And for my favorite part of this trailer, we get a really good glimpse at a mimic! Mimics can disguise themselves as just about anything and attack when the time is right. My campaign has come across a few mimics in our journey and they aren’t the nicest monsters on the block. I am sure for a trained D&D eye there are tons more easter eggs and cool moments in the trailer, but as a beginner, I was rather excited to recognize what I mentioned above.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is slated for release on March 3rd, 2023.
