YouTuber and Star Wars content creator Star Wars Explained did an exclusive interview in late January with the three architects of the three big comic runs Marvel is launching over the coming year. He interviewed each author in turn, though there were points where all three or one of the others spoke up to add additional commentary on the topic at hand. Today on CultureSlate, we look at what Alex Segura had to say about Star Wars (2025), releasing in May.

The Open Air

Alex Segura’s portion of the interview was, unfortunately, shorter than the others, mostly because time was spent discussing the Battle for Jakku maxi-series, and because Segura currently doesn’t have much written for his series. Given the interview was conducted in January, and the series is releasing in May, he might have also wanted to avoid revealing too much about his series given possible changes. Despite these caveats, one of the biggest points Segura noted was the freedom offered to him in this era.

Next to no material exists for the post-Jakku New Republic world, and he has a great deal of freedom to build what kind of narratives he wants. He described it as “hitting open air” following the dense and complex narrative around the Battle of Jakku, and he is excited to create new villains and situations for the story’s heroes to become entangled with. He also noted that the “open air” grants him time to get into the heads of each major character from the franchise.

Leia is both a new mom and a major politician in the growing New Republic, while Han is a new father. Luke is looking to learn more about his history (Segura likely means family history) and the history of the Jedi Order, but keeps finding himself drawn into other situations. Presumably, this examination extends to Lando as well. Segura also noted that there will be new side characters alongside more familiar faces.

The Story To Be Told

Segura gave some clues about what the first four issues of his comic series will focus on, and each story seems intriguing. As mentioned above, he hopes to tackle each character’s mindset, and he likely seems interested in tackling it one comic issue at a time, since he described them as each having a genre and focused on a particular character. While Segura does not outright say it, the first issue will likely be a politics-focused story as he stated it will help establish this new era, and will also have some political drama stirring in the background. Segura articulated that some planets might not want to join the New Republic, and forces are working behind the scenes to manipulate this situation. But, he also wants his series to answer the question about what happens to the Empire’s war material, and its weapons, when the Empire itself is largely gone and scattered.

Issue two is where the genre storytelling comes to the forefront, with some Lone Wolf and Cub-esque and cowboy western storytelling in a narrative which sets Han and Luke on a planet in the far reaches of the galaxy. Issue three focuses on Lando back on Cloud City, involved in helping solve a noir murder mystery, with issue four then wrapping up the first arc to his series.

The Spice Runners And More

Near the end of the interview, Alex of Star Wars Explained asked Segura about his views on the recent content regarding Kijimi and by extension the Spice Runners, from Star Wars Outlaws. Segura stated his belief that Zeva wouldn’t be happy to share her territory and noted that the interactions between the Runners and the Ashiga Clan introduced in the game would be a fun story to tell one day. He went on to allude that the Spice Runners likely appear later in his series, but only after he was done playing with the, as he called them, “big toys.” He also noted that his series will have easter eggs big and small, with nods to other content, which should prove exciting!
