Possibilities For 'X-Men '97' Season 1 Finale Episodes
In the next few weeks, X-Men ‘97 will release the last three episodes of its first season. When we last saw the X-Men, tragedy had just struck Genosha. Thousands of lives were lost in the Master Mold massacre, including Gambit, Madelyne Pryor, and supposedly Magneto. Rogue is broken beyond belief at their deaths, particularly Gambit’s and Magneto’s, and immediately begins seeking revenge. Her fury is slowed down by none other than Captain America. It’ll be interesting to see how he plays into the rest of X-Men ‘97.
While the X-Men grieve and try to hunt down the responsible party, they find themselves in a standoff with a modified Bolivar Trask. The ending of episode 7 revealed Trask’s ally, Mister Sinister, to be working for Bastion, who possibly still has Magneto alive. Beau DeMayo has explained on social media that Bastion has been hiding in plain sight repeatedly earlier this season, too (all episodes so far except 3 and 6). The original X-Men episode “Descent” is about the origins of Mister Sinister and his partnership with James Xavier, which gives more insight into his obsession with the X-Men.
In the meantime, things have gotten complicated with Jean Grey and Madelyne Pryor’s relationships with Scott Summers. Nathan Summers also makes an appearance, revealing that he is in fact, Cable. Cable coming in to help the X-Men in their fight against Trask hints that Bastion’s attack and futuristic technology could be the beginning of an alternate timeline.
The previous couple of episodes have also shown Charles Xavier alive and well in the cosmos and engaged to his partner, Lilandra Neramani, empress of the Shi’ar Empire. The Shi’ar storyline additionally brought Ronan and the Kree into X-Men ‘97. For the moment, the X-Men do not know that Professor X is alive, but he has just received news of the Genosha attack, so he will likely return to Earth in this next episode.
The X-Men: The Animated Series episodes “Sanctuary” and “Final Decision” both focus on Magneto and Professor X working together to help save the X-Men and mutants worldwide. There’s the possibility for a universal team effort as well if the Shi’ar join Professor X’s cause. Expect great adventures throughout the three-part finale, “Tolerance is Extinction,” beginning May 1 on Disney+.
