WARNING: MILD SPOILERS FOR THE BAD BATCH SEASON 2 EPISODE 5, “ENTOMBED”

There may be a power in the galaxy even older than the Jedi. The latest episode for The Bad Batch just introduced Skara Nal and a mysterious artifact known only as the Heart of the Mountain.

In this episode, the Batch finds a compass in a scrap heap containing coordinates for the Kaldar Trinary system. After following the coordinates, they find what Phee Genoa believes to be the entrance to the ancient site of Skara Nal, said to have been the homeplace of a people known as the Ancients. What follows is an adventure ala Indiana Jones, where the Batch has to solve puzzles and escape traps to discover Skara Nal’s legendary artifact, the Heart of the Mountain.

RELATED:

The crystalline artifact is connected to a socket within a mecha-robot walker, created by the Ancients as a prehistoric war machine. In pirate legends, the Heart of the Mountain was said to contain great power, and its place inside the mecha walker kept the vehicle inert.

The Batch discovers the full force of the Ancient’s powerful weaponry when Phee removes the Heart of the Mountain. The superweapon activates, its rampage nearly costing the Batch its ship and stranding them on Skara Nal. In order to save the crew, Phee must return the artifact to its rightful place.

Little else is known about the Ancients, though Tech is able to determine that the ruins of their society must have been built before the establishment of the Republic. That means this mysterious tribe predates the Jedi Order, and may be the oldest society yet seen in a Star Wars series. If this episode is any indication, there is a lot more to explore about this mysterious tribe.
