Caution: Contains Spoilers For HBO's House Of The Dragon

The lineage of the Targaryen Dynasty is a complicated matter in Westeros. Aegon The Conqueror, the first Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne, united the Seven Kingdoms and began a rule that lasted nearly 300 years. And now that family's lineage is at the center of HBO's new series, House Of The Dragon. The succession of King Viserys becomes an issue that ignites a bloody civil war, leading to House Targaryen almost wiping themselves off the map.

With that said, let's look at ExpressVPN’s infographic that explains the complicated House Targaryen family tree in detail. Luckily, the infographic is very compact, given that the family liked to keep the bloodline pure. However, that can make the number of family members with the same name a problem.

Rhaenyra Targaryen

The eldest child and only daughter of King Viserys Targaryen, Rhaenyra is also the only child from his first marriage. She was named the heir to the Iron Throne in 105 AC after the death of Rhaenyra's mother during childbirth. Rhaenyra should be next in line to the throne in 129 AC following her father's death. Her eldest son, Jacaerys, is poised to inherit the Iron Throne upon her death. And Lucerys, the middle son, to inherit her late husband Laenor's titles and claims in Driftmark following Lord Corlys' death. Now it is up to Rhaenyra and her second husband and uncle, Daemon, to come together in the years ahead.

Daemon Targaryen

Daemon is the brother of King Viserys and the second husband of Rhaenyra. He started as the clear successor to Viserys at the beginning of season 1. That quickly changed after the death of Rheanyra's mother, Aemma. Following Daemon's removal from the line of succession, he married Lord Corlys Velaryon's Daughter, Laena, with who he had two children, Baela and Rhaena.

A few years after, Laena dies while in childbirth, depicted in House Of The Dragon as an act of self-immolation. Afterward, Daemon would return to Kings Landing and take the hand of his niece Rhaenyra. During his third marriage, Daemon has two more children, Aegon the Younger and Viserys. In the coming season, expect him to become Rhaenyra's Protector of the Realm.

Aegon II Targaryen

Aegon is the sixth Targaryen King to sit on the Iron Throne following his father's death in 129 AC. This event is what kicks off the Dance of Dragons and leads to Aegon's death. When King Viserys died, his body was confined to his chambers for seven days to keep the news of his death a secret. Queen Alicent Hightower arranges the coronation of Aegon II. Aegon will rule the Six Kingdoms, but for how long?

Aemond "One Eye" Targaryen

The second son of King Viserys I, Aemond Targaryen, lost an eye when he was young in an altercation with his cousin, Jacaerys, over Aemond's dragon Vhagar. He considered his eye a fair trade for the dragon as he had taken it before the rightful rider, Baela Velaryon, could bond with her mother's dragon. Aemond is a cold person and an adept combatant. He will become an invaluable ally to King Aegon II in season 2.

This overview should give any fan of House Of The Dragon a much better idea of the state of the House Targaryen family tree going into the second season. Hopefully, you'll also know which characters will be worth keeping an eye on. While House Targaryen will rule for another 152 years, the future certainly feels uncertain for them during House Of The Dragon.
