'Love Hurts' Spoiler-Free Review

Love Hurts is a weirdly adorable action comedy. It's Ke Huy Quan's first starring role, and he is definitely one of the best parts. It is action-packed, a bit cheesy, but most importantly, a lot of fun.
Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan) seems like your average guy. He has a good job and a nice house, and everyone loves him. However, he is not proud of his past and has been running from it ever since. His cushy life gets turned upside down when his old flame, Rose (Ariana DeBose), reappears, and his brother starts hunting them down. Why, you may ask?
Well, supposedly, Rose stole from him, and Marvin was supposed to kill her, which he didn’t. She also knows about how he was stealing money from the Russians. So you can imagine that he’s pretty upset about her still being alive. To get his cushy life back, he must finally face his past, and his brother. The movie does have two important messages about facing your past and going after what you love. For a movie focused on action and violence, it’s nice to still have a message to share with your audience. The movie also had two side stories about love. They were a bit silly, but it gave the movie more character and heart.

We all know how great of an actor Ke Huy Quan is, he won an Oscar for his role as Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once. This was his first starring role, and while the movie wasn't amazing, he sure was. It was great to see him go from the nice and reserved Marvin to the monster his brother made him. I know that sounds weird, but it was cool to see him change back to save the one he loved. He’s absolutely incredible in action roles and basically anything he’s in. His comeback in the industry has been great to see, and I love that he’s a great actor and also a nice guy. I hope his career continues for a long time, and we see him in much more.
The movie also starred Ariana DeBose. This wasn’t her best role, but her character was interesting and cool. You grow to root for her and Marvin by the end. Other cameos included Property Brother Drew Scott and former football running back Marshawn "Beastmode" Lynch, and yes, he was really credited that way. Sean Astin also had a small role, which reunited him with his Goonies co-star.

The action was never lacking and was there from the get-go. For the most part, it was pretty fluid and good. There were some moments where it did feel a bit off. The script was a bit cheesy, but that gave the movie its charm.
Love Hurts isn't revolutionary by any means. It struggles in some places, but overall, it's an entertaining time at the movies. As it takes place on Valentine's Day, it's a perfect Valentine's Day movie. So, if you’re looking for some holiday plans, go see this cheesy action comedy with a lot of heart.
Love Hurts is now playing in theaters everywhere.
