When it comes to weird creatures and terrifying monsters that inhabit television and film, there's never a shortage of discussions about them. One of the most popular topics could be the question of "what exactly makes these monsters scary?” There are numerous reasons, but one thing that can surely stand out is the overwhelming size and strength that some of these monsters can reach.

There have been plenty of movies made on the subject of skyscraper-destroying, earthquake-causing, damsel-kidnapping titans. Whether they were made for the purpose of showcasing a giant scary monster, showing the deeper meaning behind human society, or just watching two beasts fight to the death, these seven movies are sure to be a fun watch for your next movie night!

7. Sharknado

Let’s begin with a very infamous example; what you see is what you get with this made-for-TV film. While the idea itself is regarded as being quite ridiculous, the over-the-top nature of the entire film is what makes it an enjoyable watch. With overly hammy acting, an insane yet hilarious plot, and cheesy special effects that can only be described as "hard to look away from," there's never a dull moment with Sharknado. While the writing and dialogue blur the line between "self-aware" and "non-ironic," they only add to the hilarity of the movie. If you like movies that "jump the shark," then look no further!

6. Deep Blue Sea

Speaking of shark movies, have you ever wanted to watch a good horror movie about the dangers of over-engineered sharks that don't harm the societal outlook on them (looking at you, Jaws)? Then this film might just be for you! Much like in Jurassic Park, the dangers of genetically engineering Mother Nature's creations shine through, with each well-acted character showing the intensity of the inevitable situation that unfolds for everyone.

5. Pacific Rim

Let's face it: if you were given the opportunity to pilot a massive badass robot with your best friend to fight giant kaiju, you'd sign up in a heartbeat. Pacific Rim features the tried and true method of having giant monsters threaten cities and civilization as we know it, with a few groups of people partnering up to fight against them in giant robot suits to combat them. With amazing special effects, action-packed fight scenes, and a surprisingly deep plot that will have you on the edge of your seat, what's not to enjoy about this film?

4. Tremors

What would you do if you and your small community had to fight off giant, burrowing creatures that were slowly tearing apart your town and eating all of the citizens? Declare open season on them all and get rid of them! Tremors showcases the sneaky, nuanced side of (sorry, Graboid) worm wrangling, allowing each character to have deeper relationships and interactions, which lead to a more immersive environment. The tension and build-up are spot on, and the situation is always treated as a priority by everyone. A classic entry, and one that's earned its popularity.

3. Jurassic Park

Yes, this entry was to be expected, and for good reason. Despite how well-known (and occasionally overdone) the story is, the plot, characters, and chilling moments still hold up to this day. Spielberg was always a mastermind in crafting various settings and lore, and Jurassic Park shows off his skill perfectly. A must-watch for a hair-raising movie with lots to offer the viewer!

2. Cloverfield

While some people may find the found-footage style of filmography a little uncomfortable, there's no denying that Cloverfield truly helped define the genre. What initially starts as an innocent home video of someone's 'welcome home' party soon deteriorates into an attempt to escape the colossal beast that is rampaging the city. Shaky camera angles only add to the horrifyingly realistic fear the characters portray throughout the film. If you want a big scary monster you know to run away from, then Cloverfield is the movie for you.

1. The Host

Fans of Parasite might recognize Bong Joon Ho's name, as well as his expertly poignant and natural way of writing. While the giant freakish fish monster is incredibly scary to behold, especially considering the fact that it carries a virus, the storyline and all of the characters really make the film shine. Characters are flawed yet loveable in a human way, which only adds to the tension when big moments occur. An intriguing and captivating movie to watch in general, especially if you like films that have a deeper meaning to them. If you just like watching a giant fish creature terrorize people, then this film is still for you, coming in at the number one spot.
