Star Wars Droid Collage

A droid is the most important counterpart to have in the Star Wars universe. Everyone from Darth Vader to Yoda has (eventually) needed the loyalty and skills of a droid. While fans will always love R2-D2, C-3PO, and BB-8 the Galaxy is filled with other amazing droids, all with their own story.

1. Professor Huyang

In the fifth season of The Clone Wars Ahsoka chaperones, six padawan‘s to Ilum to retrieve their light saber crystals. After they pass a test called “The Gathering” (entering the caves and retrieving said crystals) they returned to their ship The Crucible and are introduced to Professor Huyang. The Mark IV architect droid was over 1000 years old and helped everyone from Yoda to Master Windu construct their lightsabers. In the four-episode arc, Professor Huyang helps the children construct their weapons and rescue Ahsoka after she gets ambushed and captured by pirates. Huyang loses his arms and head but never stops helping the kids, earning their trust and respect.

2. AP-5

AP-5 was a former Republic Navigator and Military Analyst. The RA-7 protocol droid was mistreated and stripped of his position once the Empire took over. Relegated to inventory duty, AP-5 continued to do his job until he discovered the Stowaway Chopper and decided to help him. The two traded war stories took over an Imperial freighter and provided a secret location for the Rebels to establish their base. AP was injured (and nearly destroyed) during their adventure but was saved by the Ghost Crew and Chopper. After that he continued to help the Rebels, go on dangerous missions and bicker with his best friend Chopper for many years.

3. K-2S0

Every member of the Rogue One crew bravely gave their lives in hopes of getting the Death Star plans to the Rebellion. None of those sacrifices would have mattered if it wasn’t for the help of a former Imperial droid. K-2S0 was a KX-series security droid who was reprogrammed by the Rebel Cassian Andor and helped the Rebellion until his destruction in 0 BBY at the Battle of Scarif. At the climax of the battle, the Rebels overcame several uphill problems but were still unable to transmit the plans after they had secured them. K2 informed them (with his last “breath”) that if they climbed to the roof of the installation (and the shield gate was opened) they would be able to send the plans to the Rebel Alliance. He then locks himself in with the stormtroopers sealing his fate but protecting Jyn and Cassian. K2’s actions weren’t enough to save any of the Rogue One crew but it gave the Rebellion (and Luke Skywalker) the chance they needed to destroy the Empire’s horrible weapon.

4. BD-1

The smallest droid on our list is none other than BD-1. The brave droid accompanied Master Eno Cordova in the final days of the Republic as he explored the history of the Zeffo. Cordova had a vision of the fall of the Republic and hid a Holocron that contained the location of all force-sensitive children in a vault on the planet Bogano. Then he blocked BD’s memory banks and programmed the droid to only reveal them when they met someone who understood what Eno was doing and someone that the droid could trust.

In the year 14 BBY Cal Kestis was saved by Eno’s former apprentice (Cere Junda) and was encouraged to find the Holocron so they could rebuild the Jedi Order. Cal is skeptical of Cere at first but quickly becomes part of their crew and BD-1’s friend. The loyal droid saves Cal from death (a few times) and supported him when he was at his lowest. The two travel from Dathomir to the Fortress Inquisitorius and in the end were able to destroy the Holocron so the Empire could not use it.

5. Chopper

C1-10P or Chopper was an old masculine C1-series astromech droid that served in The Clone Wars and was saved by Hera Syndulla after his Y-Wing was shot down. Chop remained loyal to Hera for years because of this and when she departed to fight the Empire he was quick to follow. The unpredictable and wise-cracking droid was combative and rowdy but was essential to the success of the Rebellion and even had a base named after him for his efforts. He made a brief appearance in the movie Rogue One but will make a full live-action debut in the series Ahsoka.
