As live-action movies and television series have sought to increase diversity in programming, specifically in terms of positive representation and visibility of LGBT+ individuals and their relationships, so too has animated programming in recent years, with creators such as Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe), who is non-binary, leading the way with not only one but two LGBT+ couples featured in the series. This article will explore the five of the best LGBT+ couples featured in the animated series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, The Legend of Korra, Steven Universe, and Adventure Time.

5. Catra & Adora ('She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power') – Netflix (2018-2020)

In Netflix’s reboot of the 1980s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series, the former prodigal daughter of Hordak’s evil “Horde” turned rebel and protector of Etheria, Adora (aka She-Ra), and her former Horde teammate turned frenemy, Catra, end the series together with the feline Catra saving Adora with a confession of love and kiss and then going off together to spread magic across the universe. The romantic pairing of the two characters is often referred to shorthand as “Catradora.”

Korra, the direct descendant of Avatar Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender, teamed up with businesswoman, industrialist, and engineer, Asami Sato, in the sequel series, The Legend of Korra, eventually falling in love with each other. Although the final episode of the series was more implicit about their relationship and both characters also dated one of the male characters, Mako, during the series, the show’s creators, and the subsequent comic book series, have confirmed that Korra and Asami are in a lesbian relationship together. The romantic pairing of the two characters is popularly referred to in shorthand as “Korrasami.”

3. Pearl & Rose ('Steven Universe') – Cartoon Network (2013-2019)

The character of Pearl, one of the Crystal Gems who helps protect Earth and guide Steven, is very clearly shown to have been in love with and intensely devoted to Steven’s late Crystal Gem mother, Rose Quartz (aka “Pink Diamond”). Throughout the series, their history was revealed as a very close and intimate relationship, which included complete trust in one another, as Pearl was Rose’s closest friend and confidant. They also “fused” with each other and Pearl was obsessively reckless in defending Rose. Pearl also expressed jealousy towards Steven’s father, Greg Universe, over him having been romantically involved with Rose, which resulted in Steven being born, albeit at the cost of Rose’s physical existence. Pearl also harbored some (misplaced) anger towards Steven as she blamed him for Rose giving up her physical form for Steven to be born.

2. Ruby & Sapphire ('Steven Universe') – Cartoon Network (2013-2019)

Ruby and Sapphire are two female Crystal Gems canonically married in the series and live in a state of permanent fusion as the current leader of the Crystal Gems known as “Garnett.” After a conflict between them, their (re-)fusion in the series was depicted via a same-sex wedding.

1. Marceline & Princess Bubblegum ('Adventure Time') – Cartoon Network (2010-2018)

Although it seems like an unlikely pairing, Princess Bubblegum, the Princess and ruler of Candy Kingdom, and Marceline, a 1000-year-old Vampire Queen, are shown to be romantically involved with each other throughout the series, Adventure Time. The series epilogue also explicitly shows them together as a couple living together.
