A 'Labyrinth' Sequel Is In The Works
New reports have surfaced from the underground that a new Labyrinth film is coming. Despite earlier reports of a planned reboot of the classic 1986 Jim Henson Studios feature fantasy film, it will instead be a sequel. Next to that, no information has been made available about the sequel, its potential cast, release date, or much of anything else at this time. We only know that it will be a sequel and that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers has been tapped to write and direct the film.
For those who have yet to see the original film or have forgotten the synopsis of the film: “Frustrated with her half-brother, Sarah summons goblins to take him away. When they actually do, she must rescue him from a fantastical world.” While the film wrapped the story up at the end of the film, the fantastical creatures Sarah met during her bizarre ordeal reappeared to Sarah, played by a young Jennifer Connelly, and reminded her that they would always be there for her should she need them. As such, there remain lots of possibilities for how they might continue the storyline and what characters might be involved in the new storyline.

The Goblin King, Jareth, played by the late glam rock icon David Bowie, made a quick reappearance in his character’s owl form in the final moments, demonstrating that he continued to exist, and suggesting that his character could reappear in the sequel. However, due to Bowie’s passing in 2016, he would need to be recast if Jareth were to make a reappearance in the sequel film, which would likely not be an easy task. Or additionally, Eggers could just create a new “Goblin King”-esque character or even another antagonist completely unrelated to Bowie’s character, Jareth.
Jennifer Connelly is still alive and acting, so it is possible she could be involved in the film in some way, likely reprising her role as Sarah. The state of the animatronics from the original film is unknown, except for one of them, but, hopefully, they will include as many of those characters as possible in the sequel. The puppet created for the character of Hoggle in the original film famously went missing after the production of the film wrapped after being stored on a plane.
The puppet was discovered several years later in unclaimed luggage in a severely deteriorated shape. However, when he was found years later, he was restored (mostly) to his former glory and put on display at the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Alabama, which currently owns the puppet. If Hoggle were written to appear in the sequel, it is, of course, always possible for Jim Henson Studios to create a new one.
Whatever form the Labyrinth sequel ultimately takes, fans of the original film, especially those who grew up in the heyday of Jim Henson Studios’ creations in the 1970s-1980s such as The Muppet Show, The Dark Crystal, and Fraggle Rock, will be eagerly waiting for more updates as they are reported.
