Pixar in its heyday was arguably the most critically acclaimed studio of all time. With cinema-changing films such as the Toy Story films, as well as giant hits like Monsters Inc., A Bugs Life, and Finding Nemo, to say nothing of the string of successes that was RatatouilleWall-EUp and Toy Story 3, the latter two scoring Best Picture Oscar nominations. However, there was one film that seemed to be the black sheep of the group: Cars. While it was a financial success, it didn’t achieve the same level of critical success as the other films. The general reaction to it seemed to be “meh.”

However, that was critically, financially, it was a completely different story. Cars has so far earned Disney and Pixar nearly two billion dollars, and that was just at the box office. The insane amount of merchandise has kept this franchise in the public consciousness for almost two decades now. No kid has thirty Wall-E toys. The average eight-year-old has roughly 700 Cars toys.

Now, if there’s one thing that studios love to do with cash cows, it’s keep going with them. That seems to be the case with Cars as well. Alongside Toy Story and Inside Out, we’ll be seeing more Cars in the near future, according to Pixar creative director Jay Ward. Quote,

"There are more Cars things brewing, I can't say much more yet. Cars has got a life that will keep going. I am working on some real fun projects right now that you will see in a couple of years. It takes us a while to make them.”

It will be interesting to see what those projects are. Cars 3 seemed to be a good sendoff for the series, but then again, so did Toy Story 3. Given Pixar’s latest sequel run, it’s not ridiculous to think that we’ll see Cars 4 in the very near future, which would likely delve into life for Lightning McQueen after his racing days are long over. More shorts and maybe a TV series aren’t out of the question either. We’ll just have to wait and see.
