Al Pacino Addresses And Clarifies That Awkward Best Picture Oscar Announcement
It’s award season once again, and the 96th Oscars recently occurred. A bit of drama began to brew after a specific category’s winner announcement took an interesting turn. When the winner of the Best Picture award was ready to be announced by acting legend Al Pacino, things didn’t go as expected. Rather than restate which ten films were nominated, he went straight into the announcement declaring Oppenheimer (2023) the winner. This delivery method has triggered a bit of tension, which Pacino has been quick to address.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Pacino discussed the situation. He acknowledged the problem, stating, "There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the Best Picture award.” The actor took a second to stress the circumstances of his role, “I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony.” He continued, “I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wished for this award to be presented."

Pacino wrapped up his apology, acknowledging the pain he potentially caused and relating to those who were potentially injured parties:
"I realize being nominated is a huge milestone in one's life and to not be fully recognized is offensive and hurtful. I say this as someone who profoundly relates with filmmakers, actors, and producers, so I deeply empathize with those who have been slighted by this oversight, and it's why I felt it necessary to make this statement."
