Alex Kingston Reflects On Her Time In 'Doctor Who' As River Song
Alex Kingston was recently interviewed in Doctor Who Magazine for the first time in fifteen years, reflecting on marriage to television’s longest-serving Doctor. Kingston is more heavily embedded in the TARDIS culture than most, a fan favorite at conventions and a Whovian author (Doctor Who: The Ruby’s Curse) she continues to voice a willingness to return to the franchise. Russell T. Davies has brought back a former Doctor in the form of David Tennant, so nothing is impossible.
In the interview, Alex Kingston talks about the secrecy around her role. The cast and crew, (including Matt Smith) had no idea about the nuptials until the day of the shoot. The script was kept on a need-to-know basis to prevent the secret from getting out.
Kingston was handpicked by Steven Moffat in one phone call that changed Doctor Who lore forever. Moffat said that he wouldn’t have gone ahead with writing the love story if she wasn’t on board. Thankfully she agreed! The River Song arc is often cited as one of the best series of episodes, starting with Silence in The Library, which appears in many fans’ top ten. Doctor Who would not have been the same without her.
