'Skull & Bones' Leaked Footage Shows Off Key Features Such As Ship Crafting And More
Long have fans of Ubisoft's fourth installment of the Assassin's Creed franchise waited for a sort of follow up to 'Black Flag, that wait seems to be almost over. Yesterday Ubisoft leaked a six minute reveal for 'Skull & Bones' an open world sea-fairing adventure game focusing on a mixture of PVP, PVE, and crafting elements. If the game's title doesn't ring a bell that is because it has been quite a while since we have seen an update, the last real announcement about the game was at E3 in 2017. Luckily for all of us wanting another adventure on the high seas Ubisoft's boat has sprung a leak.
The six minute video is nothing more than a narrated clip of various gameplay elements opening on the hideout of pirates everywhere Sainte-Anne. The video explains the various function of the hub world showing different stores and how to accept contracts. Later in the video the narrator explains the need of critical resources; rations, water, repair kits, and of course ammunition. We then see some clothing options and the introduction to your starting ship the dhow, more than likely this is the smallest ship in the game. After this the video explains some things about keeping crew morale up and explains what happens on your death, your ship gets destroyed, you lose infamy, and your cargo is left at sea to recover.

One of the aspects of the video we weren't expecting is a breakdown of the crafting system. Explaining that you can hunt animals for skin and meat, alongside the ore, wood, and fiber. They produce resources for building new ships, weapons, and even furniture. All give different perks like more HP or damage. We also find out that there is a blueprint mechanic for crafting but aren't given much more to go on.
The combat seems to be very fast paced and encourages boarding actions to maximize your loot. The combat seems to operate in the same way as Black Flag. Utilizing the need to be constantly on the move and making yourself as hard a target as possible while closing the gap to get the boarding action off. However the video makes note that you can quickly go from predator to prey as there are NPC's who seem dedicated to hunting down the most infamous pirates, or at least the most active at that moment.
Perhaps the most interesting mechanic of the game is something called infamy. This system tracks your reputation as a pirate, leveling up infamy grants you access to new abilities and skills, using the system for ship upgrades and cosmetics. The only way to level infamy at this time seems to be by accepting high risk high reward 'contracts' with NPCs as well as general exploration and combat. It seems like this will be your experience pool for the game at this time, but one wonders what added challenge will arise from losing infamy on death.
Though it seems at this time there is no way to find the footage that was leaked. Ubisoft quickly corrected their error, but we can still be glad as they confirmed it was legitimate. As it turns out the video was intended as a primer for alpha testers which gives us a window on development. The Twitter account for 'Skull & Bones' jumped in on the fun posting a tweet simply saying to keep your eyes peeled with a promo video after it happened. So perhaps a release by the end of 2022 is not impossible. No matter the case the footage we have seen has our staff excited for the release of 'Skull & Bones'.
