Eccleston’s problems with the BBC during his revival-opening stint as the Ninth Doctor caused him to leave after one series. He would have nothing to do with the franchise until his participation with Big Finish, known as The Ninth Doctor Adventures was announced in August 2020. The two seasons of the audio series have had their releases laid out in four volumes each every three months from May to February 2021-22 and 2022-23. His decade-plus non-involvement in the franchise necessitated the creation of the War Doctor (played by John Hurt) for 2013’s 50th-anniversary special episode “The Day of the Doctor”. He alluded to his involvement in Once and Future over the summer, mentioning working with the late David Warner for it.
On the TV side, his announced co-stars for the story all appeared in the BBC centenary special “The Power of the Doctor”, including Tennant, who will be playing the Fourteenth Doctor for three 60th anniversary specials in November, before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as Fifteen.
