Bob Newhart sadly passed at the age of 94 in his home in Los Angeles on 18th July 2024. Newhart turned to comedy in 1960 after stints in the army and accountancy. His brand of dry situational stand-up connected with audiences around the world and grew into his own series. The Bob Newhart Show aired from 1972 to 1978 and concluded with a shock ‘it was all a dream’ ending.

Early in his career, he landed a series of plum Hollywood roles such as the voice of Bernard in Disney’s The Rescuers and Major Major in Catch-22. He continued to dabble in the movies, playing Elle Wood’s confidante Sid Porter in Legally Blonde 2:  Red, White and Blonde and Papa Elf in the hit Christmas movie Elf. However, it was on the small screen where he really shined. He fronted several self-titled shows, including Newhart and Bob. As he transitioned into his golden years, he took smaller, but not less inconsequential parts.  Desperate Housewives’ Morty Flickman, Professor Proton in The Big Bang Theory/Young Sheldon, and Ben Hollander on ER are just some of the impactful cameos that he has made.

Bob Newhart’s wife of over sixty years passed last year but he is survived by four children, Robert, Timothy, Jennifer, and Courtney. We wish them all the best at this trying time.
