When new generations of game consoles are released, fans are generally excited about their preferred mechanism of escapism. There are high hopes that everything will work correctly from the first moment they unbox their console. Public discussion of such fears can be traced back to the launch of the Xbox 360 when the red LED light activated around the power button to indicate a fatal malfunction. This became known in gamer culture as the red ring of death. Recently, these concerns were projected onto the PlayStation 5 when Wololo reported that storing the PS5 vertically could cause damage to the unit.

Fans were initially excited at the prospect of displaying the PS5 vertically. However, small hardware repair shops are now raising concerns that doing so could damage the cooling unit as the liquid metal used to cool the console spills and freezes, damaging the inside of the console. More specifically, the issue stems from a seal between the APU and the cooler. If the seal fails, that will cause the liquid metal to spill out. This could short-circuit the machine, among other problems.

The issue does not seem to be widespread amongst all PS5 users. Therefore, the decision to laying it horizontally or standing it vertically will be left to the discretion of the individual gamer. Only the future will tell if the console will enjoy any longevity. However, the consensus amongst professional gaming sites and companies is that horizontal is best.
