Santa came and gave Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA)fans a ton of gifts short of debuting new shows. There has been a lot of development on the ATLA front in the last year, especially within the last week. There will be a new show debuting the same year as the adult Gaang movie in 2025, and it will be focused on the next Avatar after Korra.

Speaking of the Gaang movie, according to Avatar News, a global casting call has gone out for the roles of the young adult Aang and his friends. One of those roles, however, has already been cast, and it’s an exciting one for ATLA fans. Dante Basco will be returning to voice Zuko.

RELATED:

Basco voiced Prince Zuko in one of the best-told redemption arcs. Zuko is one of the most well-liked characters in the series, so much so that many people preferred to see Katara fall for him rather than Aang. Basco stayed in the family in the sequel series The Legend of Korra when he voiced Iroh, Firelord Zuko’s grandson, and commander of Republic City’s navy. By the time of that series, the older Zuko was voiced by Bruce Davison.

According to Avatar News, the casting call is for Asian and indigenous actors in their 20s. Previous coverage revealed that the first movie was originally thought to be about Avatar Kyoshi. Later on, the updated news revealed that the movie would be about the Gaang as young adults. The original creators of the animated universe, Bryan Konietzko and Micheal Dante DiMartino, have stated that the movie will be based on an original storyline and not on anything in comics or books. The movie could very well be about the founding of Republic City since Aang and his friends were closely involved with that event as adults.

The year is coming to an end, and with a whole year of conventions, and announcements ahead, there will surely be more information about this beloved universe.
