David Harbour came to the defense of Marvel’s Thunderbolts in recent interviews. Back in 2019, Martin Scorsese criticized superhero movies as “not cinema” and being more like “theme parks.” In an interview with ScreenRant Harbour rejected this notion explaining, “I think that [Thunderbolts] it’s a sort of a shot in the arm for Marvel, and yeah, it’s full of pretentious Oscar nominees like Florence Pugh. We have to highlight that. Sebastian Stan. I mean, the credits are insane. The awards, the glitter, it’s absolute pure cinema.” His co-star Pugh shares similar thoughts, describing the film as a badass Indie.
Harbour elaborated that the movie is filled with “a bunch of film and theater nerds.” He explained, “Yeah, I would also like to take it even a step further: I am a Tony nominee. Tony-nominated David Harbour. So we have theater, we've done off-Broadway plays together…I mean, look, Jake [Schreier] is a funny guy, and I think we're all aware of how ridiculous this movie sounded to the Marvel community a year ago when it was presented. Like, these losers, you're going to put them all in a film and have them run around with no reference to whatever?” Harbour plays the role of the Red Guardian joined by Pugh’s Yelena, Stan’s Buckey Barnes, Wyatt Russel’s John Walker, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character Valentina puts this ragtag team of anti-heroes and former villains together in an adventure that will likely set the stage for Avengers: Doomsday. Thunderbolts lands in theaters on May 2, 2025.
