ThunderCats started in 1985 as an animated TV series that was created by Tobin Wolf and ran for four seasons until 1989. In a way, it was the successor to Masters of the Universe, and like that, the cartoons were accompanied by a line of action figures. A second ThunderCats cartoon series ran for just one season in 2011 on Cartoon series, and a third one, called ThunderCats Roar, came out in 2020 but was also canceled after just one season.
To accompany the original animated show, Marvel Comics published a comic series, consisting of 24 issues, while Marvel UK brought out a new ThunderCats comic series at the same time, comprising 129 issues over three years. From 2002, Wildstorm Productions, an imprint of DC Comics, released five non-cannon ThunderCats miniseries and several one-shots.
When Warner-Bos acquired Lorimar-Telepictures in 1989, it also obtained the rights to ThunderCats and holds them to this day.
As Nick Barrucci, who founded Dynamite Entertainment in 2004, puts it: "Warner Bros. has been at the heart of entertainment in America and across the world for an incredible hundred years, and home to so many beloved stories and franchises. We're incredibly excited to bring many of them with the biggest and most passionate fanbases back to comics or for the first time, as we work with WBD and wonderful creators to bring all-new stories to the fans!”
