Disney Feature Animation Workers Voted To Unionize Thursday

Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, many other industry workers are seeking to unionize. The latest vote to join a union comes from Disney Feature Animation workers. On Wednesday, November 1, the animators voted 93% in favor of being represented by the International Alliance of Stage Employees (IATSE) and The Animation Guild (TAG). The Animation Guild shared in a post on X, “Congratulations to the production workers at Disney Feature Animation! Today, they voted in an election to be represented by IATSE and TAG. With a 96% voter turnout, 93% voted yes!!! Let’s celebrate!”
Previously, Disney employees weren’t eligible to join TAG as they were considered a separate class of employees. In September, the National Labor Relations Board recognized the separate classes of employees but decided that they shared a community of interest optimal for unionization.

Production coordinator Liz Davalos shared her thoughts in an official statement, “This historic win during Disney’s 100th-year celebration means that production folks can turn their wish into a reality.” Another production coordinator Hannah Bialosky expressed similar thoughts that the decision to unionize “sets a strong precedent for all other production management workers in the animation industry hoping to organize with their studios.” Disney joins Nickelodeon and Marvel VFX as the newest members of the guild.
