Disney+ Won't Air Their 'Spiderwick Chronicles' Series Despite It Being Finished

The Spiderwick Chronicles is a series of eight books about a trio of siblings and their adventures, or misadventures, in their new home, the Spiderwick Estate, discovering a whole world of mythical creatures that they never knew existed. While the series never reached the same level of popularity as, say, A Series of Unfortunate Events, it did have a movie come out in 2008 starring Freddie Highmore of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fame, which received decent reviews from critics and middling reviews from audiences. In 2023 it was announced that a series based on the books would be released on Disney+. Or not.
It was recently announced that the 8-episode miniseries would not be released on Disney+ or any other streaming platform at this time. It is a cost-cutting measure, which makes sense given that Disney and indeed many other streaming services are hemorrhaging money. According to Disney’s CFO: “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation. As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.”
This is all unfortunate given that the miniseries has actually been completed. However, costs must be cut given the current financial state of many streaming services. So far Paramount has been shopping the series to other companies, but there has been no indication that any of them are thinking about taking it on. Will it ever see the light of day? Who knows. Either way, it’s a disappointing fate for a completed series that many people put a lot of work into.
