Remember in July when it was reported that Disney and the BBC were talking about bringing Doctor Who to Disney+? Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa announced on Live with Kelly and Ryan that it was indeed happening, and it’s a bigger deal than we thought.

Not only is Disney+ getting the streaming rights to new Doctor Who from 2023 onward, but they’re also the international home. The service is the show’s new global home, except in the UK and Ireland, where it will continue to air on the BBC. Because it would be ridiculous to jump ship altogether less than 48 hours after celebrating the network’s 100th birthday. As learned Sunday, that begins with David Tennant’s three specials as the Fourteenth Doctor, followed by Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Fifteenth Doctor, which will start on Christmas 2023, with his first series expected in Spring 2024.

As of right now, no preexisting streaming deals will be disrupted. The original run’s 26 seasons remain on Britbox, and the revival up to “The Power of the Doctor” will stay on HBO Max. When it gets there anyway, as Easter’s Special “The Legend of the Sea Devils” was added to the service on Thursday, October 20. Spinoffs The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, which initially ran in the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors’ eras, also remain at HBO Ma. Twelfth Doctor-era spinoff Class is currently on Tubi, for what it’s worth. After that, it’ll be business as usual, according to Matt Mitovich of TVLine.

But yes, by moving to Disney+, Doctor Who is leaving linear television for much of the world. In the United States, the show is leaving BBC America behind. BBC America has been airing new Doctor Who since Christmas 2008’s Special “The Next Doctor,” which means a nearly 14-year run comes to an end. Granted, it had been a while since the show aired regularly on the network without leading to a new episode, but it was the network where Doctor Who truly exploded in popularity and became a mainstream global phenomenon.

A new era brings a new logo, though this one is still very familiar. Presumably, in a gesture tied to the 60th anniversary, symbolized by diamonds, the diamond logo originally used from 1973 to 1980 returns. This time, the “Who” gives off regeneration energy, combining a new element with the old. It makes sense to wait for an announcement like this to reveal it, while in the 2023 teaser, the show title was in plain text. It’s Time and Relative Dimension in Streaming now.
