Former US President Jimmy Carter Has Passed Away At The Age Of 100

Former U.S. President James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr. passed away on December 29, 2024, in his Plains, Georgia home. Carter had medical issues in 2023, which culminated in him choosing to stay at home with his family and enter hospice care. He was 100 years old, the only former President to reach this age.

Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He graduated from Plains High School in 1941.  In 1946, Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, and in the same year, he married Rosalynn Smith, also known as Eleanor Rosalynn Carter. Throughout Carter’s military career, he received the rank of lieutenant commander, several medals, and the Submarine Warfare Insignia before retiring in 1953. He first entered politics in 1963 as a part of the Georgia state senate.

Carter was the 39th President of the United States and was the democratic candidate of that race. His presidency lasted from January 20, 1977, to January 20, 1981. During his time as president, he had a hand in energy policies and political agreements, and he called attention to human rights issues, among other things. Following his presidency, Carter established the Carter Center to continue his human rights work. He has had a hand in peace negotiations and nonprofit work and has written multiple books and documents ranging from political and conflict commentary to poetry to memoirs.

Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work focusing on human rights advancement. The former President also received several honorary doctorates, honorary fellow awards, a wide variety of medals, other peace prizes, and humanitarian acknowledgements and awards. Several things have been given his namesake as well. He even had the scientific name of the bluegrass darter, a fish found in Kentucky and Tennessee, named after him.

Carter’s legacy will be remembered for decades to come as a humanitarian and activist. He is survived by his four children John William, Amy Lynn, Donnel Jeffrey, James Earl III, and several grandchildren. As a former U.S. President Carter will be given a state funeral and National Day of Mourning; this will be held on January 9, 2025, at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.. The family will have a private service as well; remember to respect his family and friends in this time of mourning.
