'Hogwarts Legacy' Features First Transgender Character In Harry Potter Universe

Hogwarts Legacy is set in the 1800s, well before any of the adventures familiar to fans occurred. In all this time, there hasn’t been a canonical, openly transgender character. That may change with the introduction of Sirona Ryan.

Sirona Ryan is a witch the player is meant to interact with while looking for a specific goblin. She is the proprietress of the Three Broomsticks, a pub many fans will be familiar with in Hogsmeade. There is a strong basis for her to be trans, as her known dialog, according to GameRevolution, includes a statement of the goblin realizing she was a witch before her classmates.

The full quote, via GameRevolution, reads:

“Hadn’t seen him in years when he came in a few months ago. But, he recognized me instantly. Which is more than I can say for some of my own classmates. Took them a second to realize I was actually a witch, not a wizard.”

Until a voice credit is listed and more information is released regarding the character, this could possibly change. Given Rowling’s stance on the subject versus her stated lack of involvement in the story of the game, anything is possible. If this remains the way it seems, it’ll be a small step in the right direction for the franchise.

In an effort to address one of the controversies surrounding the game, the official site’s FAQ page states:

“J.K. Rowling is not involved in the creation of the game, but as creator of the wizarding world and one of the world’s greatest storytellers, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World. This is not a new story from J.K. Rowling, however we have collaborated closely with her team on all aspects of the game to ensure it remains in line with the magical experiences fans expect.”
