John Carpenter Explains Why Michael Myers Can't Die
He’s one of the most famous movie characters of all time. He will never stop. The shot of the empty ground at the end of the original Halloween cemented him as something not human. You can blow him up, you can stab him, you can shoot him, but he will. Not. Die. Why is that? What is it about Michael Meyers that makes him unkillable? John Carpenter knows. According to the director in an interview:
“Well, I’ll tell you what, he’s an all-purpose character. If want the first movie, you’ve got that. If you want him to be able to kill all the time, you’ve got that. The only other all-purpose monster is Godzilla.”
It makes sense. Part of what makes Michael scary in the original movie is how little is known about him, especially when it comes to his motives. He just is, to the point where he’s referred to in the credits as just “The Shape.” He’s a perfect mixture of boy-next-door and monster of your nightmares. Even his mask is as blank as possible, allowing you to project your fears onto it. With such a character, Carpenter is correct. If you want a character in your horror movie who is just there to slash their way through everyone, you could do a whole lot worse than Michael Meyers.
