Jon Cryer Reiterates His Future On The CW's 'Superman and Lois'
In mid-December, That Hashtag Show reported that Superman & Lois was going to introduce its Lex Luthor in season three, thanks to a casting call they discovered. This upset the folks over at Always Hold On To Smallville, and the ensuing discussion on Twitter led to a direct tag of the Earth-Prime portrayer of the character, Supergirl’s Jon Cryer. And he ended up responding.
Cryer was never owed the role. If “The show takes place on Earth-Prime” and “The show will introduce Lex Luthor” had ever overlapped, he might have been. However, in Superman & Lois’s second season finale, it was established that this series takes place on its own Earth. It was quite the swerve, after planned crossovers, drop-bys of David Ramsey as Diggle, and the return of Jenna Dewan as Lucy Lane, but it happened. As much as Clark, Lois, Diggle and Lucy would indicate that everyone in their life looked the same as those in that of their doppelgangers, Sam Lane was played by Glenn Morshower on Supergirl, and Dylan Walsh here, exact doppelgangers were never guaranteed. Essentially, as of that move, he had no past, present, or guaranteed future with the series. Production was sure to let Cryer know about the show's direction, and he was grateful they reached out instead of hearing it secondhand through industry publications.

The first reason he states would prevent him from playing this Earth’s Lex is because he’s shooting a new comedy series for NBC next month. The series, still seemingly untitled since its September pickup, is being prepared for next season. It is created by Mike O’Malley (GUTS, Get the Picture, Glee, Survivor’s Remorse) and also stars Donald Faison (Legends of Tomorrow’s only-partially realized Booster Gold), and Abigail Spencer. Cryer plays Jim, a corporate compliance officer described as “good-natured, sarcastic yet sincere” and gets along incredibly well with everyone, and is navigating divorce and co-parenting with Julia, played by Spencer, who has now been wooed by the owner of Jim’s favorite sports team.
One would think the audience would be more open to alternate Lexes. It can be recalled the series started and Wolé Parks was touted as playing an alternate-universe Lex Luthor before it was revealed he was John Henry Irons. Superman & Lois returns for its third season on The CW on March 14.
