Low Box Office Numbers Means That 'Blue Beetle' Will Leave Theaters As The Lowest-Grossing DCU Movie Of All Time
DC Studios’ latest DCEU movie, Blue Beetle, has ended its theatrical run with the lowest-grossing (global) box office draw of only $128 million, even less than Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to 2019’s Shazam!, earned a scant five million dollars more at $133 million. The low box office take of Blue Beetle gives it the distinction of being the lowest-grossing movie put out by the studio to date. The lack of popularity of the movie has been ascribed to the more obscure nature of the character, as well as the general lack of success of the DCEU to date, which could negatively affect future projects such as the Aquaman sequel.
For those unfamiliar with Blue Beetle, the movie is based on the DC comic book adventures of Jaime Reyes, a young man who dons an alien super suit in the form of a blue alien scarab to become a world-saving hero. However, unlike, say, Iron Man, Jamie’s suit has several unique qualities to the super suit, particularly in that the suit is a symbiotic bio-organism that communicates and bonds with Jaime, a la Venom. The suit even has its own name, Khaji-Da, which triggers its transformation into the Blue Beetle. The suit is essentially a learning AI who, as it bonds with the good-hearted Jaime can change its more violent nature. Its weapons systems are virtually unlimited as well.

In this origin story film, a blue alien scarab chooses a kind-hearted recent college graduate, Jamie Reyes, played by Xolo Mariduena, bestowing upon him superpowers, leading him to become the Super Hero Blue Beetle. Despite the lack of success of Blue Beetle at the box office, DC Studio Head James Gunn has stated that he has further story plans for the character, Jaime Reyes (aka Blue Beetle) in the new DCU and, as such, Blue Beetle will continue to appear in the DCU when called for. The movie is currently available to watch on Digital and is set to be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 31.
