Michael Caine Has Announced That He Is Officially Retiring From Acting
Talking about his now final film, The Great Escaper, on BBC Radio 4’s Today talk show, Sir Michael Caine confirmed he is officially retiring from acting. He had originally turned down the role three times, having been sent the script. Every time he read it, he kept falling in love with it, and so accepted this last lead role as Bernard Johnson before retiring.
“I kept saying I’m gonna retire,” Caine said on the show. “Well, I am now because I figure, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead, and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m likely to get now are old med, 90-year-old men – well, maybe 85, you know? And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this. I’ve got wonderful reviews. What am I gonna do to beat this?’”

Caine had been out of work for three years during the COVID pandemic and had indeed got it himself. “I sat there, and I had nothing to do, I couldn’t do any movies, nothing,” Caine recalled. “I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and I’ve written several biographies. Then, I wrote a fiction book… I’m quite amazed.” With The Great Escaper being Caine’s final film, it puts a close on a legacy that includes Now You See Me, Inception, and The Dark Knight.
That fiction book will be released in December, titled Deadly Game. As for The Great Escaper, it is in theatres now, telling the story of a World War II veteran who sneaks out of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France.
