'Old Boy' Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Triumphant Return To Theaters
With the summer blockbuster season over for the year and while we still bask in the glow that is Barbie and metaphorically speaking, Oppenheimer, now is the time for theatres to send out their re-release and nostalgia films to try and capture the hearts, minds, and wallets of those longing for a simpler times at the theatre. A film celebrating its 20th anniversary with one such rerelease is the Korean film classic and Cannes prize winner, Old Boy. And given the limited release with only LA, New York, and San Francisco screening it is still making a surprising amount of money which shows the movie still has legs with an expected take of over $1 million this weekend alone after the initial three city open then a broader release across North America.
Old Boy stars Choi Min-Sik as the title character Oh Dae-Su. It is about a man who was kidnapped and held captive for over 15 years and then suddenly released and given 5 days to figure out his captor and the reason behind the imprisonment. The movie directed by Park Chan-Wook was visually stunning with great action sequences which have found themselves often duplicated in many action movies since. In addition to all of that, the story does take you on a bit of a trip, and let’s say certain aspects of the movie are best left to your own viewing if you haven’t seen it already.
