PlayStation Portal Update Has Cloud Streaming Beta
The PlayStation handheld, the PlayStation Portal, just raised its value. Previously, the handheld was used to stream games from the PlayStation 5, essentially serving only as a second screen to the console. Now, the console is rolling out cloud streaming as a beta test. The streaming requires a premium subscription to PS Plus, but it gives the handheld access to a full online library of PlayStation games from every console, including PS5. This means that a gamer with a solid internet connection could drop $200 for the console plus the price of the subscription and swing through New York as Miles Morales in the PS5 exclusive Spider-Man 2.
As this is a beta and not the full release of cloud streaming, there are a few limitations to the service. Game Trials, streaming purchased games on the PS Store, Party voice chat, game invites, the Create button, 3D audio, and in-game commerce will not be available in the initial rollout. However, the ability to play PS5 games on a handheld console anywhere with a stable internet connection opens up so many possibilities for dedicated gamers. This new feature may put the Portal on more Christmas lists, especially if Sony discounts it on Black Friday.
