Sonic has been having a brand resurgence since 2020 when the popular Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out. The movie made $306.8 million at the box office, and its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, made $405.4 million. To top it off, the latest mainline 3D title, Sonic Frontiers, is the highest-selling 3D Sonic game of all time and has been praised by critics and fans alike. The Blue Blur’s success has extended even to television with the success of Sonic Prime on Netflix. Now, SEGA hopes to have similar success with its other classic IPS, according to SEGA’s chief operating officer Shuji Utsumi.

“We have other major IPs,” Utsumi said to CNBC at the Web Summit tech conference in Lisbon, Portugal. “We are thinking of reviving other classical IPs too.”

In particular, Utsumi highlighted the popular Yakuza and Persona franchises. The company hopes to adapt these properties to other venues such as movies and even Roblox games. In doing so, they hope to revitalize these brands just like they revitalized Sonic.

Utsumi also expressed SEGA’s intentions to acquire more studios, stating:

”As an entity of Sega Sammy, we are acquiring some of the companies. We just made an announcement [to buy Rovio]. We are still looking for opportunities for growth.”

Speaking of acquisitions, Utsumi also addressed rumors regarding them being acquired by Microsoft or any other company:

“Many companies are interested. We feel honored…We have attractive IPs and potentials. Companies owned by the owner. A strong owner. I don’t think that kind of transaction is going to happen.”

Regardless, it seems that SEGA’s future is looking bright even beyond the Blue Blur speeding back to the top, and the 63-year-old company is looking at ways to expand its success.
