Will there be a Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars movie featuring Kylo Ren?

Director Shawn Levy recently gave an interview to Variety in which he expounded some of his various projects and the statuses thereof. Despite the fact that some of his big projects (such as Deadpool 3 and the penultimate season of Stranger Things) are on hold due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, Levy had much to say about his recently completed projects as well as his upcoming projects.

Regarding Netflix’s Stranger Things series, which Levy described as a “flag-bearing franchise for the streaming service,” Levy was asked whether he was concerned about the negative effects that the SAG-AFTRA strike might have on the final season, specifically in regards to the aging of the characters. Levy expressed a note of concern, but also noted that they have a good makeup team for the series and seemed confident that they would be able to overcome any negative impact the ongoing strike may have. He added that he and the rest of the crew are very eager to return to work on the series, but he also wants everybody to get a fair deal at the bargaining table.

Perhaps most noteworthy was his discussion about a mystery Star Wars film to which he is attached. Levy gave few details and had no comment about rumors that he could be working on a Star Wars movie set chronologically prior to The Force Awakens featuring one of the primary antagonists of the sequel trilogy: Kylo Ren. He did note that Kathleen Kennedy has given him a lot of creative freedom to make the movie that he, Shawn Levy, would like to make, and that has his own style. He gave Variety no details about when we might expect this mystery Star Wars film to debut. He also stated that he is having a good experience working on the latest installment of Deadpool and demonstrating that it is possible to make a movie within a universe that is bigger than any one film, and that it gives him hope that he can do the same with his Star Wars movie.

Lastly, Levy spent some of the interview promoting his upcoming limited series, All The Light We Cannot See, which will debut on Netflix on November 2. The series is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize Award-Winning novel by Anthony Doerr. The series is set during World War II about a courageous blind teenager, set to be portrayed by Aria Mia Loberti, living under the Nazi occupation of France. When asked about the timeliness of its subject matter in regards to growing antisemitism worldwide, Levy agreed with the concern about the world right now and expressed frustration that some of the mistakes of the past are being repeated despite knowing better. However, Levy also spoke of the need for people to “hold on to the belief that there is light we cannot see.”
