The production for Simon Pegg’s film Angels in the Asylum is on an indefinite hold. According to Deadline, the film ran out of funds part of the way through production and was officially halted on February 15, 2025. The entirety of the film’s funding wasn’t secured before the start of production, and they claim that a funding agreement with Parkland Pictures, the film’s distributor, wasn’t completed. The CEO of Parkland Pictures, John Cairns, alleges that there was no financing agreement, nor a finalized tax credit for funding.

Producers of the film Rob Sorrenti and Heather Greenwood sent an email to the cast and crew to address the situation.  In the email, they state (via Deadline), “We began production with funds from our equity investors and were assured at that time we would receive the balance of the necessary contracted funds to continue production.” The email continued, affirming their stance on a funding agreement issue, “After commencing principal photography, we faced unprecedented challenges with our financier, who struggled to meet their contractual obligations, pushing us into an unwanted and unplanned hiatus.”

The email also gave a bit of hope for the future, “We are actively exploring financing options that will not only meet all existing obligations to all creditors but will also enable us to complete production. Trust that our small, dedicated team is working hard to secure new financing opportunities.” They seemingly haven’t given up on the project, nor are they actively ignoring what is currently owed to those involved in the project.

Angels in the Asylum is based on a true story.  Set between 1932 and 1955, it will focus on a group of women who were typhoid carriers and institutionalized in a mental asylum because of it. The cast includes Katherine Waterston as Mary, Minnie Driver as Elizabeth, Rose Williams as Yvonne, and Simon Pegg as Dr. Anderson. Whether it will have a theatrical run or go straight to a streaming platform is now unclear.
