Studios Intensify Talks With Striking Unions

As we start to wind down the summer and head into fall, it means a couple of things for those in the world of Hollywood. First, the big summer blockbusters are going to come to an end and second, we are going to get the prestige pieces that will help shape the race for award season. But a new wrinkle in a lot of plans has come in the shape of the ongoing, double whammy of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike which has essentially halted production of big films but has also slowed and altogether stopped any sort of promotion for upcoming films and it appears the studios are finally paying attention.
Originally some studio execs said they would be willing to drag this out for the long haul but with losses being recorded by some of the studios and the lack of ANY activity for their releases from the stars it seems like the studios may be the first to blink. In a recent meeting of the studios, it was declared that a return to the bargaining table needs to happen sooner rather than later. And while SAG-AFTRA and the WGA appear to have a unified front and message, the studios are running differently with various ideas in mind based on their operating models like streaming vs theatrical releases, and the use of AI in their productions amongst some of the bigger things could mean that negotiations will only move forward if everyone on their side can work together.
But the fact that the studios want to make their way back to the table is a good thing and it will be nice once we get back at it.
