'The Boy And The Heron' Has Won The First Golden Globe For Hayao Miyazaki

Legendary animated filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron won Best Animated Feature Film at the 81st Golden Globe Awards. The competition was extremely steep, but the Japanese fantasy film pulled ahead of the crowd. The film’s win has racked up a nifty list of firsts. This is the first Golden Globe win for his animation studio, Studio Ghibli, the distributor GKIDS, and for Miyazaki himself. This is also the first category win for an animated piece not originally made in English. It is reportedly the last film Miyazaki will make before retirement, though there’s always a chance that he could make another.
The Boy and the Heron is set during the Pacific War. It follows a boy named Mahito Maki, whose mother died and whose father remarried. They move to the countryside with his stepmother, where Mahito finds an abandoned tower that takes him to another world with the help of the talking Grey Heron; this new world is full of magic and danger, sending Mahito on the adventure of a lifetime. It is semi-autobiographical.

The film has amassed over $39.7 million domestically, and over $137.22 million overall; this puts it as the fourth highest-grossing anime film in U.S. box office history, beating out Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2019) and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022). The Boy and the Heron is still available in select theaters and can currently be streamed on Apple TV+, so go watch it while you can!
