The Marvels, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, is financially and critically a flop for Marvel Studios since it was released on November 10. Many Marvel fans are critical of the content produced throughout Phase Four, and much of Phase 5 proves the same by the film’s box office performance. Initially, Marvel anticipated the film would make it to the $60 million mark on opening weekend; however, it only grossed over $46 million the entire weekend. Nia DaCosta directs the film.

Teyonah Parris returns as Monica Rambeau, freshly empowered by the events of Wanda Vision, now known as Photon, and Iman Vellani returns to the role of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, from her stint on the Disney+ series of the same name. Samuel L Jackson is back as Nick Fury since his last appearance in the Disney+ show Secret Invasion which is also considered a flop regarding creativity and narrative cohesion.

However, The Marvels achieved one upbeat piece of news: the film was the biggest opening weekend ever for a black female director, Nia DaCosta. The director has received a bit of notoriety for her previous work, such as 2018’s Little Woods starring Tessa Thompson and Candyman, which earned DaCosta awards such as the Directors to Watch and Best Horror Film in 2021 from the Hollywood Critics Association.

The Marvels is in theatres now.
