'The Phantom Menace' Is One Of The Biggest Opening Days For A Re-Release
25 years ago, George Lucas gave Star Wars fans what they had been dreaming of since the early 80s when the first new installment in the Star Wars saga was released with The Phantom Menace. It kicked off the prequel trilogy, but it did not necessarily go the way one might expect. It was heavily criticized, and there was some harsh harassment of some of its actors.
Time, it seems, has a way of healing all wounds, and in the two-and-a-half decades since its release, The Phantom Menace and the other prequels have come to a new appreciation in fans’ eyes. Fan reactions to Hayden Christensen’s return to the franchise along with Ahmed Best are a testament to this.

This past weekend, that rekindled love was shown at the box office when The Phantom Menace brought in over $8 million domestically, and around $6.4 million internationally. It brings the total box office for Episode I to over $1.04 billion, making it the fourth highest-grossing live-action Star Wars film, only behind the sequel trilogy.
The success of The Phantom Menace makes it one of the best opening weekends for a re-release in history and was just shy, domestically, of the re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar, which brought in nearly $10 million on its second run.
