With the world still adapting to the “new normal” thanks to the pandemic, people have seen prices go up for nearly everything imaginable. Food, cars, and even cotton balls have increased in price. Electronics are no exception and also suffer from shortages of components to complete a single unit. Add high global inflation rates, and simply trying to enjoy life is expensive.

Today, Jim Ryan, the President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) released a statement regarding a new recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 in select markets across the globe.

Nearly every market will see a price increase immediately, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America(LATAM), and Canada. As of this writing, there are no plans to increase the price in the United States. Ryan also provided an RRP list with prices for both PS5s- the digital edition and the physical edition that features an Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive.

In July, SIE announced that it shipped 21.7 million PS 5 consoles as of June 31, 2022, with 2.4 million of those over the past 3 months. Sony also saw a boost in PS Plus subscriptions with one million new subscribers in the past year.

Demand for the PlayStation 5 has been steadfast since its release thanks to the shortage of available units, with restocks selling out almost immediately. The release slate for the rest of 2022 is jam-packed with well-known franchises, including The Last of Us Part 1 and FIFA 23 in September, Overwatch 2, Gotham Knights, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in October, and God of War Ragnarok in December.
