The Time Jump Between 'The Book Of Boba Fett' And 'The Mandalorian' Was Inspired By Marvel, Says Jon Favreau

Jon Favreau, known for his work in both Marvel and Star Wars, said in a tour for The Mandalorian season 3 that he used the MCU as inspiration for how he and other producers are structuring the SW live-action universe.

According to Favreau, the path chosen by Marvel and the Russo Brothers (who directed a considerable number of MCU films, including Avengers) became complex along the way, but demonstrated that an episodic method of building up did wonders for them. He mentioned movies like Black Panther and Captain Marvel that were treated like parts of the universe as a whole but also had their own storylines. The Book of Boba Fett, Favreau argues, followed a similar structure. By making TBOBF episodes as chapters - like those of a novel - there was space for Mando and Grogu to be reunited on the show.

This also gives showrunners and creators some help for The Mandalorian season 3. They do not have to spend so much time dwelling on “where’s Grogu” and more on what Grogu has learned from his time training with Luke and Mando’s redemption arc. The time jump will not be forgotten though, according to Favreau:

And of course, thanks to Disney Plus, you can go back to watch certain episodes, and we’re also gonna have some recaps that we put together for people who are maybe more casual viewers who wanna be brought up to speed after two years and remind them where the characters were. But Grogu has developed a lot and now time has even passed since The Book of Boba Fett and since he trained with Luke, so as you will see, his Force powers have gotten greater.”

Therefore, by following this path previously set by Marvel, Favreau, who is one of the main figures in SW currently, aims to design this universe the same way the MCU has done with the Avengers. Nothing is isolated in a reality of their own, but they still have to solve their own issues and follow their own paths.

The Mandalorian season 3 premieres Wednesday, March 1st on Disney+. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, Katee Sackhoff as Bo Katan, and Carl Weathers as Greef Karga. Season 3 is also likely to bridge live-action even more with content created for Clone Wars, like the dome city in Mandalore.
